Yeah, one of the fastest, most musical minds in the history of the music. Smiley

Would completely agree with this.  He occupies a hole in the jazz history books

Only Phil Woods (post-Bird) ever reached such heights.
There was a story about Frank Foster and some of the Basie guys watching Phil ceaselessly create on a ridiculous tempo; they just stood there and asked each other "how the hell does he do that? Shocked
I thought the same thing when I saw your Dad burn the place up on "Lover, Come Back To Me".
Unforgettable. Smiley

Jon,
I'm almost positive it's been re-issued on CD under Schifrin's name as "Tin Tin Deo".
Someone posted on another board that they just found a used copy on Amazon.

I'm jealous. I have never heard this album. I do have 1 cut from what I think is another album with them from the same period. It's a calypso blues. Dad takes a phenomenal 2 chorus solo on that. So if the playing is like that, wow. I would agree that his sound has a lot of body during this period --less delicate than the 50s recording and way different than the later years which was with different Gibsons or the Hofner and set-ups

I finally picked this LP up for $8 after seeing it in the same used record store for $30(!)
I mentioned last time here that I was able to listen to some of the LP in the store, and was impressed with the amount of writing featuring Jimmy, and his solos.
This was recorded sometime in the early 1960s, probably 1962, and features Schifrin's regular group back then; Leo Wright, Art Davis and Rudy Collins, with Willie Rodriguez on percussion.
the eight songs feature four Schifrin originals, Desafinado, "Kush" by Diz, "Rhythmaning" by Monk, and "Cubano Be" by George Russell.
Jimmy's sound here is my favorite of all his different periods.
Stronger than his 50's sound, and less bassy than his later recordings, it's similar to the way he sounds on the Gary McFarland LP, very full and solid.
Schifrin's stuff is largely modal, with Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms, but some swing blowing sections.
Jimmy has a long solo on Schifrin's "Sphyros" a medium modal tune, and as usual, displays his melodic genius.
Jimmy has another long solo on Monk's "Rhythmaning" which is taken way up there. Here, he shows why he was the greatest jazz improviser on guitar on up tempo tunes.
Completely relaxed, still melodic even at this tempo, still able to use space, with not a superfluous note, it sounds like someone took his medium tempo and sped it up to twice the speed electronically.
Nobody could do this on guitar, and few other instrumentalists were calable of this either.
His only other features are a chord solo introduction to Schifrin's "Midnight in Sao Paulo"  and a short but effective solo on "Desafinado".
On the other tunes, it's still a pleasure to hear him play melodies written out by Schifrin, with that remarkable sound he had during this period.

I was attempting to upload a DVD translated copy last nite as I do with Youtube. The copy of the JA concert I had spun for me has this infernal buzz in the sound.  Undecided I will have to start from scratch with the VHS or find the backup I made
